Um dos muitos benefícios do sono é a liberação de todos os hormônios importantes para a correta manutenção do organismo, principalmente, o FAMOSO hormônio do crescimento ou GH. Quando você está em um ciclo REM profundo, seu corpo libera quantidades adequadas de hormônios responsáveis pela reparação de tecidos, o que inclui a hipertrofia de músculos, rejuvenescimento da pele, crescimento ósseo e capilar. Sabendo de todos estes fatores, é possível potencializar (e muito) estes mecanismos através da ingestão de alguns nutrientes específicos logo antes de dormir. Apesar de não ser uma pratica muito bem-vinda por alguns, dormir com o estomago preenchido (não completamente cheio) é infinitamente melhor do que dormir em jejum, exceto para aqueles que sofrem de refluxo gastresofágico. O segredo está em saber exatamente o que comer. Um estudo de 2014 (RES,et al.) demonstrou que uma porção de proteína (caseína)  ingerida antes de dormir é efetivamente digerida e absorvida, aumentando a disponibilidade de aminoácidos plasmáticos e estimulando a síntese proteica (reparando tecidos). Outro detalhe importante é o índice glicêmico da refeição em questão, picos de insulina são os piores inimigos da liberação de GH, e por este motivo se torna mais prudente ingerir pouco (ou até nenhum) carboidrato próximo do horário de dormir, a não ser que seu treino seja neste horário, neste caso a necessidade da reposição de glicogênio ira controlar a ação da insulina e rapidamente ela retornará a níveis reduzidos.
