After our investigation into this power plant in Rockport, in_mi_power refused to answer our questions at a public hearing. We were going to ask about proposed rate hikes that would help pay for upgrades to the coal fired power station. No dice. indiana rockportindiana power energy air journalism

Seeing the back of that shirt gave me serious chills, in addition to making me nauseous and filling me with dread. Either that shirt is meant to be funny or it's meant to be taken seriously - both options equally terrifying. Comment from Arao Ameny:

I learn something new everyday. I enjoyed the talk 'The Zimbabwean Intellectual in the Social Media Age: A Conversation with Tinashe Mushakavanhu'. He became a journalist and a writer because he wanted to write the stories he wanted to read, to "fill in gaps in the newspapers," as he called it. I learned that his experiences in New York City, where he's lived for a year now, have been about finding out how others (and himself) construct identities in a place that isn't their own. On books, language and access, "I was reading books in Shona and Ndebele [languages] in the New York Public Library, at the Schomburg, books I knew in title only, that I couldn't access in Zimbabwe." On writing and literature (which I couldn't stop thinking about for rest of the day...) : "Dambudzo Marechera is a writer who has helped me negotiate my existence in Zimbabwe. I am born-free (born after independence) yet I'm not free and that is a contradiction I live with." (Needless to say, this very poignant and insightful thought made me also think of my own Uganda and President Museveni whose been in power since 1986). I learned so much today. journalism media literature writing Zimbabwe Africa socialmedia

Comment from Sadia:

torontolife features the story of Samra Zafar, a woman to was married at 16, survived an arranged marriage and went on to become a star student universityoftoronto. A mother of 2, she has started a non profit to support other women going through similar circumstances. These stories exist right here in Canada. Often they are secret or done behind closed doors in the name of culture. They are your neighbour, your friend, your colleague. And sometimes the only thing that stands between their freedom and a life too painful to describe is the kindness and support of a friend in their life. Thanks Samra for sharing your story, for being brave and for opening the door for others to do the same.
