Tears were shed. There are things happening in this eclipse photo that I honestly don't even understand. In that short moment after totality where the filters were off the camera & you could still feel the darkness around you... one of the most brilliant displays of light occurred I have ever seen took place. The goal was simple, to add perspective to an otherworldly event through the talents of my friends. And I'm lucky to have some talented friends. . Thank you garrison_rowland handsomerobinson for climbing & rigging this line at 1AM.. for the months of prep and crazy planning. russell_holliday & snackfarmer for helping create these images, fjording a river fully clothed, and powering through the 30 hour drive to get to Oregon and back in 2 days.

Since I picked up a camera I wanted my photos to be a tool to bring people closer to the ocean. The sea was my first canvas & water is still my favorite subject. At times it can be overwhelming to think of how we can give back to it & the creatures that call it home. It's often through smallest actions that big changes are made. . I got a text from my good buddy ladzinski to stopsucking... which felt standard pretty given Keith's sense of humor. Literally one of the funniest dudes I know. He explained this campaign to bring public awareness to the excessive and wasteful use of plastic straws. The lonelywhale strawlessocean.org campaign . If it sounds crazy please take this into consideration: Every single day, Americans alone use over 500 MILLION straws. All that plastic, for 1 measly drink at a time, becomes garbage- much of which ends up in the ocean, landfills and even micro fragments in our drinking water. It's sadly true and completely fixable. I've seen straws on the most remote beaches of the planet.. plastic doesn't discriminate.. it is everywhere. A minor conscience effort can make a difference. Big change can be achieved through small efforts, if we all made this small choice to simply avoid using plastic straws it would go a long way. I'm challenging my friend renan_ozturk next to not suck 🤙🏻 ( might as well challenge his wife taylorfreesolo the same 😅)

There is a few moments in your life as a photographer where you get to call yourself 'Lucky'. Right place.. right time sorta thing. This was one of them. A smoke filled morning above Yosemite valley from a fire that started during the night. Had we known this fire was going to happen.. we never would have gone. But instead I smiled through smoke filled air & saw a perspective I realized I would probably never see again. . This morning was another one of these moments.. I am still trying to mentally process what I just saw & experienced during the Eclipse. The word EPIC comes to mind.. which is basically what I say about every life changing experience .. blame it on my lack of vocabulary & lack of school. For now I'm fine with it.. 'Epic' will just have to do.

Sharing one of your favorite trails with those you love has always been a pretty special experience for me. Last month I escaped work for a quick 1.5 day 30 mile backpack trip through Yosemite's side country. With a backcountry permit the world becomes your oyster out there. No more fighting for crowded campsites along the valley floor. . My little brother is leaving the US for a few years next week & we needed one more memory from one of our special places. We gathered a small crew of our closest friends & family and set out. This campsite ( with views of Half Dome peaking out in the background) was one of my best memories. I've found that where you pitch your tent isn't as Important as who you are with. Gonna miss you brother.

The idea that somewhere 'out there' is a wave breaking on a remote beach with nobody around ... on a tiny cluster of islands in a small bay is what keeps me up at night dreaming. Turning a literal 'what if' or a pin on google earth into reality is the best part of any expedition. danedamus

5am this morning in Reine. I had dreams of hiking... but opted to obey doctors orders & give the shoulder a rest. Instead we watched the sun rise & rain squalls move through the deep fjord... I may have even found Half Domes little brother. . iphone

I always tell folks I started my career in a Van.. a 3 month road trip living in a VW Bus photographing California from north to south. It took me almost a decade but I finally made a dream project of mine happen (alongside some really creative people) I built my own. The novelty of living in a van wore off a long time ago. 😆 This rig was created with a single purpose, hitting the road at a moments notice & photographing the beauty this world has to offer. Whether it's with my kids or the guys I work with. I am releasing a video in the following weeks about the entire process of the build from what we used & fabricated to how we did it and ultimately why. One of the only things I had on my bucket list for Lofoten was to climb this beautiful feature known as 'Svolværgeita'. But instead my shoes & harness sat in my bag never to be unpacked. I hurt my shoulder protecting a water housing in the surf ... and separated my AC joint. So instead of climbing I sat with my arm in a sling & got to photograph my friends on this perfectly fun granite spire. The steep hike up with a heavy pack was probably the furthest thing from what the ER doctor meant when he said to Take it Easy & no weight bearing. Wounds heal... Experiences like this come once. If at all. hvitblikk marqswegge

Have you ever read a book you can't put down? Taking notes on the pages & studying it like a manual for life. The autobiography of 'Ansel Adams' has been like that for me lately. He discusses The formula for creativity as being simple... 'A freedom from rules and techniques'. Are the results meant to be perfect? No. I don't think so. Nothing great ever begins that way.

Start your morning at the beach with a dip in the Pacific. End it with a hike & campfire in the Sierra. There are no better days than these. The close proximity of mountains & ocean are what keep me here. . The open space & open mindedness from where I was raised is what I'm grateful for most.

It's often you (the viewer) that comes to mind when I'm shooting photographs like this. I've gone to great lengths to bring scale & ultimately understanding to an otherwise foreign and undefinable landscape. While flying over these braided river systems, this small Piper Cub below our Cessna helped give a perspective for how large these glacial floodplains appear with the naked eye. Matching our speed as we created this image was almost impossible as we struggled to maintain a distance of 1,000 ft apart. I've never felt more sick while trying to focus through a viewfinder as our plane turned to reveal the ground below. . . A collection of this 6 year body of work is still on display at paulnicklengallery in NYC as apart of 'Vanishing Worlds' a fine art show that looks at some of our most delicate landscapes. Signed copies of my book are also available.

This beach changed my life. Amidst losing all feeling in my toes & fingers I had never actually felt more deeply than in this moment years ago. I learned valuable lessons about the important of risk, and the joys of enduring the cold on that beach. It's been a few years but I always knew I would return at some point. This Saturday I fly back to Norway for a quick trip to revisit some of these places that inspired me so long ago. It was even the basis for my TED talk & a big section of the memoir I've been writing.
